In Transition… Who Am I?

It’s the question we dread. It’s the most common opening question when you’re networking and it can be the determining factor if you stay “top-of-mind” when the meeting’s over. It might even hold you back from networking altogether. How do you answer, make an impression and keep up your confidence?

Own Who You Are!

The next time someone asks you “So, what do you do?” Instead of fretting over the standard “well, I used to…” answer, change the dialogue with “Let me tell you who I am…” and list off the qualities that make you a great human being. Change “Manager” to “Leader,” “Mentor,” or “Coach.” Tell them how much you love to solve problems, come up with new ideas and help others. Then, tell them what you are passionate about. Make it about what you’re looking for now to feed that passion. Get them inspired by you!

Your Narrative Becomes Reality

Talking in the present tense, about who you are, stops you from dwelling on the past. You are no longer reliving the negative experience of a job loss. You are fully in the moment and looking forward to the future. It’s a positive mindset that’ll make others smile… and want to hear more… and want to help you… without you asking for help! My mood around being asked “so, what do you do?” instantly changed when I changed my elevator speech from a review of my resume to a personal profile of what makes me who I am. And I only use the best parts. Hey, It’s my narrative!

Believe What You Speak

Here’s the added bonus of telling people who you are and not what you do… confidence. When you list off your best qualities you start to believe in your self again. Introductions become easy. You might even become the center of the conversation because people are not used to hearing who you are as an opener. Confidence is your most valuable asset when you’re in transition. Say things about yourself that shine a light on your positive human attributes is one of the best pick-me-ups you can give yourself!

Stop fearing the question “what do you do?” and tell them “WHO you are!” So… who are you?
